SUGARING HAIR REMOVAL
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sugaring is a method of hair removal using a sugar paste composed of sugar, water and lemon. The sugar paste is molded against the direction of hair growth, then removed from the root in the direction of the hair growth with a flick of the wrist. Unlike traditional wax, sugar extracts the hair in its natural growth pattern, resulting in less hair breakage, ingrown hairs, irritation and inflammation. With regular services, sugaring can lead to reduced hair growth, with hair growing back softer, finer and more sparse.
Here are some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your appointment and embrace a hair-free lifestyle. If you have any contraindications or additional inquiries, please contact Ritual Skincare before booking your appointment.

This depends on the service and your personal hair growth. We recommend face and underarm sugaring every 2-4 weeks, bikini and body sugaring every 4-5 weeks. Scheduling your hair removal services on a regular basis ensures the hair will become more sparse and the service will feel less intense. (Results will vary per individual.)
-
We strongly recommend you do not shave between appointments, since you will be starting from the beginning and have to wait longer before you can come in for your next appointment. The appointment after shaving will feel intense and delay the reduction of hair growth. Since hair grows in three different cycles, your first three appointments are the most important to minimize the hair growth.
-
For optimal results, schedule your services 3 months prior to the date you are preparing for. To ensure you are hair free we will assist you in scheduling appointments, including the week of the date you are preparing for. Since hair grows in three different cycles, your first three appointments are the most important to minimize the hair growth.

Like any form of hair removal, sugaring isn't free of discomfort, however it is superior and tends to be considerably less painful than waxing because the paste does not adhere to live skin cells. The first time is the most uncomfortable and feels less intense when you return within the recommended maintenance period by your esthetician because the hair becomes more sparse. We do recommend avoiding stimulants like caffeine and alcohol the day of your service, as they increase blood flow and sensitivity. The use of a numbing cream, a topical anesthetic, may help you feel more comfortable.
-
My first intention is for you to feel safe and comfortable throughout your service(s). As a professional I know that you may feel vulnerable and nervous. I want to assure you that you are in great hands. For a Modest Bikini you can leave panties on. For an Extended Bikini, Extended Bikini Plus, Full Brazilian or a Brazilian Maintenance you will need to remove panties. In the studio I will explain how you will prepare for the service: you’ll need to undress from the waist down and place the towel over your lap. I will step out for a few minutes to give you privacy. During the service your service I will educate you about post care, pre-booking and answer any questions you have.

There are medications, both topical and oral, that cause the skin to become sensitized and more susceptible to lifting (when the upper layer of your skin becomes fully removed), resulting in serious injury and possible scarring. If you are taking or using medications or treatments that can cause thinning of the skin, for your own safety, we cannot provide sugaring services at this time. You must wait an adequate amount of time to ensure the medication is out of your system prior to sugaring.
Some common contraindications are:
Antibiotics - You must be off of your antibiotics for at least as long as you were taking them but, ideally, twice as long. Example: If you are taking antibiotics for 1 week, you must be off antibiotics for 2 weeks from your last dose.
Steroid Medications - You must be off certain steroid medications, such as prednisone, for 2 weeks from your last dose.
Retin-A, Renova, Differin, Adapalene, Tazorac, Tretinoin - You must refrain from using these topical medications for a minimum of 2 to 4 weeks before your facial sugaring appointment. At that point, a patch test is necessary to determine if sugaring is possible.
Accutane - You must be off of Accutane treatment for a minimum of 1 year prior to sugaring services.
It is absolutely necessary for you to update us on recent changes to your medications, topical products or treatments. This is in your best interest, for us to know if you are taking or using anything that is a contraindication that may interfere with your results and may damage your skin during your treatments. Please call (Business name) prior to scheduling appointments if you are taking or using medications or treatments, to determine if you have any contraindications for services. We encourage you to consult your doctor with any questions as well.

Sugar primarily adheres to dead skin cells, however there are medications, ingredients in skincare products, and other factors that may cause the skin to become sensitized and more susceptible to lifting (when the upper layer of your skin becomes fully removed). All precautions are taken prior to your first visit, starting with the Sugaring Intake Form, but there are no guarantees your skin will not react or lift.

Keep the skin clean, try not to touch it, as this will transfer the dirt and bacteria from your hands onto your freshly sugared skin, potentially causing breakouts, ingrown hairs and infection.
Avoid the following for 24 hours after your appointment:
Submersion: bath, swimming, and hot tub.
Intense heat: sauna. Excessive heat can irritate this sensitive skin.
Friction: exercise and sex. Sweat carries bacteria into the follicles, potentially causing breakouts, ingrown hairs, and infection. The friction from these activities can cause irritation and ingrown hairs.
Avoid the following for 48 hours after your appointment:
Tanning or sun exposure: you are more prone to a sunburn and excessive heat can irritate the skin.
Spray tan: the ingredients might cause skin irritation, and the color application could be uneven.
It's important to exfoliate and moisturize your skin consistently between appointments to keep the skin healthy and to prevent ingrown hairs. We have several options for post-care products at the studio and online to help maintain the health of the skin and to minimize the potential for ingrown hairs and irritation. After your sugaring service, wait 24-48 hours before starting or resuming body exfoliation and one week before exfoliating your face.
